I am Haoyang, a first-year PhD student at TU/e with the Electrical Energy Systems group. Before coming to The Netherlands, I was employed as a researcher in China Southern Power Grid for energy policy and energy market analysis. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Power Systems from the South China University of Technology (SCUT) and Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 2016 and 2019, respectively. The reason why I have an interest in the power market is that it is a multidisciplinary topic combining both power systems and economics which has a lot of gaps to be bridged.

The reason I decided to join the MegaMind program is because the research track “Detecting and averting the abuse of market power in local electricity markets via AI” suits my research interests well which include power systems, electricity markets, and deep reinforcement learning algorithms. In addition, the partners and stakeholders of the project can provide professional suggestions from industrial perspectives.

In this program, the research goal of my research track is to investigate the exercise of market power in the local energy markets based on the multi-agent reinforcement learning method and to develop methods and regulations to detect and avert the abuse of market power.

During this PhD candidacy, I want to develop my knowledge of the electricity market, reinforcement learning, optimization algorithms, and carbon-neutral policies.
